Frequently Asked Questions on Radio?s

What?s the difference between Licensed and Unlicensed Radio?s?

If you looking to add value to your on-site communication either in the form of wider area coverage or extra calling features on a licensed frequency, higher powered (up to 5 watts), hand portables are available in VHF and UHF frequency bands to suit the conditions in your area of operation. However customers who do not have concerns about extra range, calling features and need personnel to be communicating as soon as possible may be happier with the lower cost license free portables.

Do I need a Radio License?
All Radios marked ?licensed? will require at least a Private Business Radio (PBR) UK General License, however Flair supply many companies Nationwide, who are more than happy with our License free portables.

How do I obtain a Radio License?
We simply send you an application form, which needs to be completed and sent together with payment to Ofcom, for an on-sight license the fee is ?75.00 per year or for a UK General License (for use all over the UK) the fee is ?60.00 for 3 years regardless of how many radios you operate.

What is the License for?
The license for this service has been designed to allow radio users access to one or more of the 15 frequencies spread across 4 PMR bands. As this is a "go anywhere" type of service the use of base stations is not permitted unless prior authorisation has been obtained from Ofcom. There is no limitation on the number of sites where a licensee can use radios covered by the PBR U.K. General license, or on the duration of use at any location. However, the maximum permitted effective radiated power for this license is limited to 5 watts.

Remember it?s simply a matter of completing an application form that we will be more than happy to send.

Can radios bought in other countries be used in the UK?
Many radios offered for sale on the internet are North American models which are highly illegal when used in this country, these frequencies are monitored by Ofcom who will impose heavy fines and confiscate equipment.

What is the range of the radios?
The range of radios is entirely dependant on where they are used and whether there are any obstructions like hills, buildings etc between the radios. All radios are capable of working over several miles providing there is good line of sight but the range will be reduced by any obstructions. Some manufacturers do quote approximate ranges of 2, 3 or even 6Km but this is just a marketing ploy and these distances refer to ideal operating conditions and should be regarded as only a guide and cannot be guaranteed. All unlicensed radios are set at exactly the same output power by law so you would expect to see no difference in performance between a 3km or 6km quoted radio.

Can I use a headset with these radios?
Yes many of our radios come with headset ports look through the web sight to see which of our many headsets would be compatible.

Can I use this type of equipment in other countries?
All unlicensed radios sold in the UK, come under the PMR446 banner which is recognised in most European countries. This type of equipment is not permitted for usage outside of Europe.

How many radios can talk to one another?
The minimum number is two and there is no maximum limit, providing the radios are within range of one another and all radios are using the same channel.

What is the typical battery life on a portable Radio?
Dependent on usage the typical battery life is 8 - 12 hours.

What are base stations?
Desk, roof or wall mounted 'talk-through' base station acts as a repeater automatically re-transmitting received signals. Ideal for wide area coverage of factories or offices using handportables. The repeater aerial is usually located at a convenient height point were it can oversee the entire site.
